Control system design for a continuous positive airway pressure ventilator
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) ventilation remains a mainstay treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Good pressure stability and pressure reduction during exhalation are of major importance to ensure clinical efficacy and comfort of CPAP therapy. In this study an experimental CPAP ventilator was constructed using an application-specific CPAP blower/motor assembly and...
متن کاملUsing tracheal pressure to trigger the ventilator and control airway pressure during continuous positive airway pressure decreases work of breathing.
STUDY OBJECTIVE We evaluated the difference in work of breathing (WOB) during spontaneous ventilation with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) among three methods of triggering the ventilator: conventional pressure triggering, tracheal pressure triggering, and flow-by triggering. METHODS In an in vitro model of the respiratory system consisting of a bellows (lungs) in a plastic caniste...
متن کاملVentilator-associated pneumonia caused by Dolosigranulum pigrum.
Dolosigranulum pigrum is an unusual gram-positive catalase-negative coccus. It was isolated, only after prolonged incubation, from bronchial secretions from a patient with ventilator-associated pneumonia. The patient responded well to antimicrobial therapy. Identification was done by 16S rRNA DNA sequence analysis, but it can be done with relatively simple phenotypic tests.
متن کاملEffect of Bubble and Ventilator-derived Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on the Management of Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Premature Neonates
Background: In this study, we aimed to compare ventilator-derived and bubble continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Vali-e-Asr Hospital, Birjand, Iran, in 2014. Methods: This cohort study was conducted among 68 patients assigned into two groups. The neonates in group A (32 infants) were treated with b...
متن کاملA case of legionella pneumonia caused by home use of continuous positive airway pressure
A 67-year-old woman with morbid obesity and severe obstructive sleep apnea presented to the emergency department with 2 days of productive cough, fever, shortness of breath and loose stools. A chest x-ray showed extensive bilateral infiltrates, and she was quickly intubated for acute hypoxic respiratory failure. A urine legionella antigen test was positive, and she was admitted to the intensive...
